Overview
The 650S Coupe/Spider model was introduced as a way of boosting the flagging sales of the preceding 12C. As a result, it boasts many direct innovations from the McLaren P1 supercar, with an ultra-light monocoque body which weighs just 165lbs (75kg), top-and-tailed by lightweight aluminium subframes. The carbon-fibre bolstered chassis from the MP4-12C found a second use in this car, while the engine got extra tweaks including improved pistons and cylinder heads, and a new exhaust system. Observers will have noticed plenty of parallels between the 650S Coupe/Spider and the P1 from the front, the design intended to be a precursor for future cars from the same stable. The 650S Coupe/Spider is pinned to the ground with 24 per cent more downforce than on the 12C, while on the inside, Alcantara upholstery is a serious upgrade on what was previously offered.
