‘S’ in McLaren language stands for ‘super’, and as this model was brought in to replace the 650S, and is the direct descendant of the P1 plug-in hybrid supercar, it’s worthy of the addition of that tell-all letter. Clever suspension modifications which allowed sensors on the bottom of the car’s dampers to feed back information about driving conditions to the onboard computer mean handling is made even more responsive. The stand-out cosmetic feature of the 720S Coupe/Spider is the two dihedral doors which pivot from the top corners to make it easier for less athletic drivers (and passengers) to get in and out. Buyers could choose between a fixed top and a retractable hardtop on the Spyder model, while the engine was a longer-stroke version of the V8 twin-turbo from the 650S, which helped bring down the rev level at which the highest torque was available.
