AMG’s reputation for transforming the performance of otherwise run-of-the-mill Mercedes models - together with its association with five-time World F1 champion Lewis Hamilton - have brought it extraordinary success. But this, the third Mercedes to be developed in-house, is a completely different beast from the original AMG GTs. Whereas they were two-seaters, this is a family-sized four-door with a lot more weight to carry around. With a nine-speed automatic gearbox to channel 577bhp (in the case of the 63 GT), or the 630bhp available in the 63 S, there’s an amazing amount of power readily on tap, along with “brilliantly judged ride and handling [that] works equally well on road and track”. Indeed, those figures prompted Autocar testers to note: “You have to question how much more power a four-door performance car could ever sensibly need”. And even then, they were impressed that, despite the car’s size, its ride was notably level and controlled, on a chassis which is “adapted almost beyond recognition” from the original AMG GT.
