The first time AMG was given carte blanche to build a road-going car in its entirety was an important moment for the magic-makers of this Mercedes division. So they proceeded to trawl through the company’s archives, and found the records for the Le Mans-winning W194, and its road-going equivalent, the W198 300SL. Then, they brought the concept firmly up-to-date, to produce a shape entirely at home in the 21st century - although they left in place the W198’s gull-wing doors - and instantly created the SLS AMG’s first big talking point. Then, as if the concept hadn’t made the car desirable enough, F1 took delivery of a number of SLSs to use as pace cars for each race.

The long bonnet of the almost all-aluminium body stretches out far past your eyeline, so that, if you ever get the chance to flex the muscles of the 6.2-litre V8 out front, the feel is that of a road-going missile, with 60mph coming and going in just 3.9 seconds from the launchpad - sorry, start line. A Black Edition model came along in 2013, with the power ramped up from 563 to 622bhp, and other engine tweaks and weight-saving measures, which tested to the limit, aided rear-end stability.
